Six… Seven? Or Six… Again?

If you haven’t seen it yet, kids are walking around these days holding their hands like a scale and saying, “six… seven.” I’m equal parts laughing, confused, and honestly a little annoyed because, unfortunately, my son has picked up this trend. Is it a dance? A secret code? Or just the next big TikTok fad making adults feel old, slightly uncoordinated, and mildly exasperated?

It got me thinking about the stuff I thought was cool when I was a kid. You know… the haircuts, the questionable fashion choices, the dance moves that probably looked like I was fighting invisible bees. And honestly, looking back at pictures of myself… yeah. Ridiculous. (the spiked hair that was dyed and the earrings wasn't my best choices) But at the time, I thought I was nailing it.

Faith is kind of like that. We try to do the right thing, balance our lives, live for God. But sometimes we’re basically walking around waving our hands in the air, muttering our version of “six… seven,” wondering why we keep tripping over the same sins. Peter said it best in that classic “doo-doo” verse: “Why do I do the things I do, for I do not want to do them?” (Romans 7:15, unofficially called the doo-doo verse in my house.)

The good news is that even when we look a little ridiculous trying to walk the line, God is still with us. He picks us up, dusts us off, and says, “Keep going—you’re doing better than you think.” Because faith isn’t about perfection. It’s about persistence, grace, and sometimes just showing up again… even when we know we’ll probably trip.

And maybe the real trick isn’t in perfect balance or the latest dance craze, but in living out what God told us long ago: Deuteronomy 6:7. (see what I did there?)“Talk about these things when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Every moment is a chance to teach, learn, and practice faith. And yes, sometimes that looks a little silly—but it’s real, it’s genuine, and it’s ours.

So the next time you see a kid doing “six… seven” or catch yourself falling into the same sin for the hundredth time, just remember: we’re all a little ridiculous sometimes. The difference is that with God, our ridiculous attempts still matter. And one day, we might even look back and laugh… just like we do at those old dance moves.
